The Columbus Convicts advanced to the World Series by knocking off the American Division champion Independence Threat in seven games.
Game 1
Independence draws first blood as Bernie Williams takes Saberhagen deep for a solo homerun in the 2nd inning. Columbus ties it in the 3rd as Rickey Henderson coaxes a walk from The Big Unit, promptly steals second and third base, and scores on Mike Bordick's ground out. Indy pops back on top in the 3rd: Ordonez draws a one-out walk, scores on Jose Offermans triple, who in turn plates the Threat's third run of the game as Al Martin singles. Mike Bordick again comes thru in the 4th for the Cons, lofting a sac fly in the 5th to cut Indy's lead to 3-2. With two outs and Henderson on 2nd, manager Goofy Cohen calls for an intentional walk of Mike Sweeney to face Carl Everett. The move works as Everett grounds out to end the inning. It remains 3-2 Independence into the bottom of the 8th inning, when The Warden calls on Danny Graves to relieve. Magglio Ordonez rips the first pitch he sees deep into the cheap seats, and Indy has the all-important insurance run as Randy Johnson strides to the
mound for the 9th inning. In quick order, Grace grounds out, Pokey Reese whiffs (earning the 4 K "Golden Sombrero"), and Brad Ausmus becomes Johnson's 14th strikeout victim of the game as he finishes off the complete game victory in game one for Independence.

Game 2
Indy gets off to a quick start in game two as Palmeiro and Garciaparra record first-inning RBIs as the Threat takes a 2-0 lead. Things get darker for Columbus in the 3rd inning as Jose Offerman leads off with a single, and Al Martin takes Fernandez deep for a 2-run homer and a 4-0 Independence lead. Hershiser takes a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but he falters, and the Cons score twice, putting together three hits and two walks (with RBIs from Everett and Dye). Indy loads the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Ayala enters from the bullpen and strikes out Bernie Williams to end the inning. Columbus gets three more hits off Herhiser in the 5th, and the game is suddenly tied at 4-4. John France relieves Hershiser to start the sixth, while Armando Reynoso enters the game for the Cons. Both hurlers keep additional runs from scoring, with Doug Johns also performing admirably for The Threat (1 2/3 innings of shutout ball). With the score sill knotted at 4 into the
home half of the 8th, Columbus calls on Danny Graves to keep Indy honest for one more inning. He can't do it, walking Matt Williams and Garciaparra to start the inning, with Luis Polonia laying down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Javy Lopez delivers the biggest hit of the season to date for Independence, drilling a two-run single as Indy moves ahead 6-4. Matt Mantei enters for Indy to try to finish off game two. He allows a lead-off single to Dye, but buckles down and strikes out Reese, Sweeney and Dunston in succession to save the game and give the Threat a 2-0 game advantage in the best-of-seven series, which now moves to Columbus.

Game 3
Trailing Independence in their quest for the World Series 0-2 the Convicts headed home hoping that some good-old-down-home cell block cookin' could get em' right.
Moyer took the hill for the Convicts, countered by Darren Dreifort. Independence wasted no time in showing Columbus that they didn't fear LHP- as Matt Willams smashed a three run shot in the first inning, plating the 2, 3 and 4 batters of the game.
Columbus would counter however, with solo shots by Mark Grace and Shawon Dunston. They would later go on to defeat the Independence Threat 5 to 4 at Penitentiary Field.
Columbus trailed 4-2 until the bottom of the seventh, when they scored three off of Dreifort, John Franco, and Roberto Hernandez.
Independence had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Former Threat Bobby Ayala(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings and Danny Graves earned the save, his 1st. Former Convict John Franco(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.

Game 4
Convicts come to life and "steal" Game 4. The Columbus onslaught included 9 steals in 11 attempts, including a steal of home by ageless wonder Shawon Dunston.
Denny Neagle outdueled "the Big Unit" and went 9 strong innings at Penitentiary Field where the Columbus Convicts beat the Independence Threat by the score of 6 to 2.
Independence was unable to claim the lead after Columbus went ahead in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. Columbus finished with 12 hits in the victory.
Neagle(1-0) allowed 2 runs on the game. Randy Johnson(1-1) was hit with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.
When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Johnson was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Neagle brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

"Small Ball" ruled the day for the 41,623 screaming fans that watched an exciting game GAME 5 at Penitentiary Field. The Columbus Convicts topped the Independence Threat by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
Columbus tallied no extra base hits on the day- with the winning run scoring in a hitless 6th inning. Independence added its fireworks in the form of two 4th innings Dingers off of lefty Nitkowski(by Lopez and B. Williams)- which knotted the game at 3... but unfortunatly for the Threat they were the only runs they'd score in the evening.
Independence was unable to claim the lead after Columbus went ahead in the 6th inning scoring a single run. Carl Everett was hit by a pitch. Everett was running on the next pitch and he stole second. One out later, Mike Bordick stepped in and he worked the squeeze play to perfection scoring the run.
Independence made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Threat cast-off Bobby Ayala(2-0) got credit for the victory in relief of surprise starter C.J. Nitkowski. Ayala pitched 2 innings and allowed no runs. Nitkowski performed his job adequately, allowing only 3 runs in 5 innings. He also chipped in offensively, adding a run scoring single. Ayala got relief help from Ugueth Urbina, a mid-season pick up from the Griffs, who appeared in his first post season game for Columbus, knotching his 1st save. The losing pitcher was Dustin Hermanson(0-1).
Ayala is turning into a real "Cinderella" in the playoff matchup against his former team. He was the last man added to the Convict playoff roster- having had a rocky regular season, he made the roster as the Con's 11th pitcher following the disqualification of Jim Mecir. Even then he was almost left off in favor of an additional hitter- Dmitri Young. Thus far he has pitched 5.1 innings of one hit ball- and has garnered two Wins.

Game 6
Columbus swarmed into Independence for game 6 of the GABL playoffs, looking to secure victory and move on to the World Series against Cleveland. It was a game for the ages:
Hershiser took the mound for the Threat, looking to stave off elimination and send the series to a deciding 7th game. Columbus countered with Bret Saberhagen - neither starter would be around for the decision.
After a lead-off single by former Threat Dave Magadan, Hershiser recorded two outs, and Harold Baines came to the plate. He quickly tore into a fastball and sent it screaming into the right field corner, where it barely cleared the wall, and the Cons were up quickly 2-0. But Indy wasted little time getting to Saberhagen, who had pitched well enough to win in a losing effort in game one. Offerman led off with a single, Al Martin followed with a double, and Raffy Palmeiro drove in the first Threat run with a single. Al Martin raced around third, but was gunned down at the plate. After Palmeiro whiffed, Garciaparra was given a second chance when Sweeney dropped a foul pop fly which would have ended the inning. Nomar drew a walk, and Matt Williams came through as he has all season for Independence, driving a ball into the gap for a two-run double and a 3-2 Threat lead. Polonia then singled, with Williams stopping at third. Javy Lopez grounded out sharply to end the exciting first inning
of game six.
One out singles by Orlando Palmeiro and Pokey Reese, followed by a long fly ball to the warning track by Mike Bordick, and the sac fly in the top of the second inning tied the game at 3-3. Columbus got to Hershiser again in the third. After plunking Everett in the back with one out, Baines singled up the middle. Mark Grace then smoked a liner up the middle that Bernie Williams made a diving effort on, but couldn't catch. When the ball finally made it back into the infield, Grace stood on third base with a triple, and the Cons led 5-3. Herhiser coaxed to pop-outs to end the inning. After another scoreless Threat half-inning, Columbus added another run inn the fourth off Orel, as Rickey Henderson singled in Magadan, and it was 6-3.
Indy clawed back in their half, scraping across a run on an Offerman ground out, and the game headed to the fifth inning with Columbus up 6-4. Hershiser pitched a shaky but scoreless top half of the inning (two walks and three long fly outs), and Matt Williams was once again the hero for the Threat in the bottom half of the frame, drilling a two out, two run homerun over the center field fence, and suddenly Independence had come all the way back to tie the game at 6-6.
Columbus threatened again in the top half of the sixth. After a leadoff single by Magadan, Henderson flew out, bringing Carl Everett to the mound. Threat skipper Cohen brought in Doug Johns to face him, and Everett slipped a double past the diving Matt Williams, but Magadan had to hold at third. Johns, tough on lefties all year, came up big, striking out Harold Baines and getting Grace out on a liner to Offerman to end the inning with no damage done. Both teams went quietly in the sixth and seventh, with Gregg Olson entering to pitch for Indy, and Danny Grave brought on for Columbus.
In the top of the eighth, Colmbus again had a runner in scoring position with no one out, but Scott Elarton and struk out Henderson and got Everett to hit a weak grounder back to the mound. Ex-Con John Franco came on to face Baines, and promptly struck him out.
In the home half of the eighth, Matt Williams led off against Graves. Once again, almost impossible to believe, Williams delivered again, stroking a breaking ball deep into the night for his second homerun of the game, and Indy was up 7-6. Ex-Threat Bobby Ayala entered, and calmly retired Javy Lopez and Mags Ordonez to keep hope alive for Columbus entering the 9th inning.
Mark Grace greeted Franco with a lead-off double, and Matt Mantei was called on to save the game for the Threat. Mike Sweeney came to the plate, and Mantei made quick work of him, striking him out on three pitches. Orlando Palmeiro then grounded out to Offerman, with Grace moving to third with two outs, the tying run 90 feet from home plate. Pokey Reese would not be denied, ripping a ball just fair down the line, and the game was tied again 7-7. Mantei got Bordick on a pop-out to end the top of the ninth.
Jose Offerman struck out the start the home half of the ninth against Ayala. Al Martin then flew out for the second out of the inning. Bernie Williams got the Indy faithful back on their feet by drawing a two-out walk. Ayala then drilled Rafael Palmeiro with a pitch on the arm, and the Threat had runners at first and second with two outs. Nomar Gariaparra, who hit .361 during the regular season, then sent The Cohen Dome into a frenzy as he tore into an Ayala heater, and the ball fell cleanly between left and center field...Bernie Williams scored without a throw and Independence had forced a game seven with a defiant 8-7 victory in game six.

Game 7
The Columbus Convicts and The Independence Threat got together for a thrilling game seven finale to the 2000 GABL first-round playoffs. The game featured a pitching match-up of Ex-Threat (and 11th overall pick in Indy's expansion draft) Alex Fernandez facing original Threat (a 4th round selection in the same expansion draft) draftee Randy Johnson.
The first inning was ugly for Indy, with Rickey Henderson going wild - a single and two stolen bases, then Mike Sweeney doubling him home for the game's first run. The game remained that way until the top of the third, when The Big Unit was reduced to the the little man, surrendering three singles, two walks and three more Columbus runs before getting out of the inning. 4-0 Cons.
With two outs and Magglio Ordonez on first base in the bottom of the third, Al Martin got things rolling for the Threat, depositing a ball into the right field bleachers to reduce the lead to 4-2. Jermaine Dye answered quickly in the top of the fourth, ripping Johnson's first offering of the inning over the fence in left-center field to put the Cons back up by three, 5-2. The Unit kept struggling, but retired the side without further damage.
In the bottom of the 4th, Independence showed why they won their division with 100 wins this season, as they went wild against Fernandez. Doubles by Garciaparra and Polonia cut it to 5-3, and after Eddie Perez drew a two out walk, Jose Offerman singled in a run to make it 5-4. Al Martin then came up huge again for Indy, placing a line drive three inches inside the foul line for a bases clearing triple, and for the first time in the game Independence was in front, 6-5. This marked the end of the road for Fernandez, who gave way to Reynoso. Bernie Williams flied out to end the inning.
Both teams recorded scoreless 5th innings. Then, with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the sixth, Rickey Henderson delivered a huge blow for Columbus, taking Johnson over the wall to knot the game at 6-6. Meanwhile, Danny Graves entered for the Convicts and kept the Threat off the scoreboard. After Pokey Reese delivered a one-out single in the top of the eighth, The Unit was done, and Scott Elarton strode in from the bullpen and calmly retired Dye and Ausmus to maintain the tie score. Polonia singled for Indy with one out in the bottom of the 8th, but Lopez, pinch-hitting, and Eddie Perez could not deliver, and we moved to the 9th inning with the game still in the balance.
Bobby Chouinard was brought in to face Henderson, who once again was a pain in the ass, milking a lead-off walk. Gregg Olson was then called on for Indy, and Henderson quickly stole second base, the 18th steal of the series for the Convicts. Mike Bordick came to the plate, a player who epitomizes the managing and drafting strategy that Manager Outcalt has relied on throughout his GABL career. Scratching, clawing, play-above-your-head kinda guys. Bordick looped a ball over Garciaparra's head, and Al Martin's throw to the plate was not in time, as Henderson slid in with the go-ahead run, 7-6. Strangely, Mike Sweeney was hit in the leg with the very next pitch from Olson, and after a brief melee, order was restored. With Olson rattled, John Franco was called on to retire Carl Everett, and he did so, getting a fly ball out. Another pitching change saw Matt Mantei enter, and get Shawon Dunston to ground out into an inning-ending double play.
With the season on the line, Ugueth Urbina strode to the mound for the Convicts, looking to lock down Indy's World Series hopes. Enrique Wilson led off, and flew out to right field for the inning's first out. Al Martin came to the plate, 2-4 with four RBIs in the game. But Urbina was better, and after a ground out to Reese, Independence was down to their final out of the 2000 campaign, barring a miraculous comeback. At the plate, the GABLs leading hitting for the season, Bernie Williams, hitting .476 for the series, with Rafael Palmeiro standing menacingly in the on-deck circle, swinging three bats. Urbina and Williams battled to a 3-2 count, and after fouling off two more pitches to remain alive, Bernie got a pitch he could hit. He slapped a sharp two hopper up the middle, but hitting hero Mike Bordick swooped into view, gobbled up the grounder and fired to Mark Grace, with the throw beating Williams by half a step. Just like that, Columbus was headed to an all-Ohio World Series
against the Cleveland Baergas, and the stunned Independence Threat players and fans sat back, realizing that their hopes and dreams of winning their first GABL Championship would have to wait at least one more season.
This was without a doubt the toughest four home games I have had to play in Strat in quite some time, and my hat is off to Dave Outcalt. HAL was a disappointment in the series, managing to a 1-6 record, but the one victory proved fatal to the Threat. Best of luck to both World Series finalists, and wait till next year!!
