Garden State Upsets Jersey
Game 1
Garden State visited in-state rivals the Jersey Shore for Game 1 of the Turnpike Series. The pitching matchup featured Tim Hudson of the Goats against the Shore's Jason Schmidt. Game one had plenty of good pitching, and not much clutch hitting.
The game started with Schmidt handling the Goats easily in the first, whiffing Kotsay and retiring Roberts and Edmonds on fly outs. In the bottom of the first, Guillen grounded out, but DeJesus and Beltre followed with singles, leaving 2 men on, 1 out, for Jim Thome. Thome promptly grounded into a doubleplay, and the threat was over. Schmidt did some wiggling of his own in the 2nd. Casey led off with a double, then Lowell walked. Schmidt got Anderson on a flyout, then Barrett returned Thome's favor, hitting into the twin-killing to end the inning.
In the home half, a 2 out rally spurred by super-subs Pickering and Stinnett left runners on the corners for Boone, but he, too, grounded out, and the game remained tied. Mark Kotsay tried to get things going in the 3rd, smoking a 2-out double, but he was stranded by a Roberts whiff. For the Shore, Guillen decided not to leave it up to anyone else, and drove himself in with a leadoff homer, and Jersey led 1-0 after 3.
Once again, the Goats got a double in the 4th - their 3rd straight inning with a 2-base hit - but, once again, the batter (Casey this time) was stranded. The Shore loaded the bases with no one out, but Hudson wriggled free allowing only one run - on a Stinnett GDP. This doubled the Shore lead to 2-0, but was disappointing all the same. The fifth inning was an odd one for Garden State.... No doubles. But, once again, a hit, and a stranded runner. The Shore went 1-2-3 in their turn. In the 6th, unbelievably, the Goats got... A double. And stranded him. Still 2-0; Jersey got a 2-out single and SB from Beltran, but left him there, as well. In the 7th, the Goats got... A one-out double. But this time, Jose Offerman followed with a triple, making it a 2-1 ballgame - with a runner on 3rd and one out. But Bellhorn grounded out, without scoring the run, and Kotsay lined out to end the inning.
The Shore went 1-2-3 again. In the 8th, Schmidt walked the leadoff man, Roberts, and was yanked for Gordon. Gordon walked Edmonds, but got Casey on a flyout, and induced a Lowell double play. Schmidt ends up going 7+, 7 hits, 2 walks, 8 K, and 1 run. The Shore manage only a Beltre single in the home 8th, and we go to the 9th, with Jersey up 2-1. Lidge comes on to start the 9th, and Garret Anderson greets him with a single. Furcal runs for Anderson, but doesn't get the lead. Lidge whiffs Michael Barrett, the gets Offerman on a fly out. With 2 outs, David Newhan pinch hits, and Lidge whiffs him, too, to end the game. 2-1, Shore. Schmidt got the win, Hudson the loss, and Lidge the save. Guillen's homer was the big blow, but the story of the game was the lack of bunched hits by the Goats... One hit per inning, almost every inning.

Game 2
Down 1-0 in the World Series, the Goats turned to spot starter Horacio Ramirez against the Shore's Livan Hernandez. Ramirez only made one start in the regular season, but due to rest issues and matchups, he found himself starting game 2 of the Turnpike series.
It didn't start well for Horacio . . . 1st Inning: After the Goats went down 1-2-3, the Shore's leadoff man, Carlos Beltran homered. After a Guillen ground out, Gload singled and Carlos Lee whiffed. With two outs -- Beltre walked. Then Hidalgo singled (2-0 Shore) and Burrell walked to load the bases. Ramirez then issued a walk to Todd Pratt, forcing in a run. Just as I declared "Ramirez sucks," he whiffed Bret Boone. But the damage was done -- and the Shore led 3-0.
2nd Inning: The Goats threatened with a Lowell single and Barrett double, but Newhan lined out to end the threat. The Shore got a single from Guillen, but that was it. 3rd Inning: The Goats came back. Roberts walked and Kotsay singled, setting up first-and-third, no outs. Then Garden State got their trademark "double rally," as Furcal and Edmonds hit two-baggers. Furcal's scored one run and Edmonds' scored two runs as the Goats tied the game, 3-3, with no one out. A Casey single put ruinners on the corners, but Lowell bounced into a double play. The go-ahead run scored, but a bigger rally was stifled.
The Goats led 4-3 after three innings after Ramirez settled down with a 1-2-3 frame 4th Inning: The Goats added a run. With two outs, Roberts walked, then stole second. Kotsay drove him in with a clutch single. The Goats extended the lead to 5-3. The Shore managed a Bret Boone single in the bottom of the inning, but that was all. 5th Inning: The Goats extended the lead with three insurance runs. Edmonds singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then the Goats did it again -- back-to-back doubles by Casey and Lowell each scored a run, making it 7-3 and chasing Livan Hernandez.
Bobby Madritch came in to pitch. An error by Beltre added another run as the Goats took a commanding 8-3 lead. But with the Shore offense, no lead is too big. A leadoff walk to Gload in the bottom of the 5th was scary, but Ramirez got Lee (K), Beltre (ground out) and Hidalgo (K) to end any threat. 6th Inning: Furcal's leadoff single was erased by a Casey double play and no damage was done.
For the Shore, they again got a leadoff walk, but Pratt bounced into the twin killing. Boone then singled, but Beltran bounced out, leaving the Goats ahead 8-3. 7th Inning: The Goats went down 1-2-3, as Bobby Madritch continued his fine relief outing. Randy Choate relieved Ramirez and allowed a one-out double to Gload and an RBI single to Carlos Lee, making it 8-4. The Goats then yanked Choate for Shingo Takatsu, who retired Beltre and pinch-hitter David DeJesus to preserve the 8-4 lead. 8th Inning: Brad Penny relieved and retired the Goats in order. Takatsu pitched around a one-out walk to keep the Shore off the board.
9th Inning: Furcal hit a lead-off double. Edmonds struck out, but Furcal swiped third base. Then Brad Penny got mad -- beaning Sean Casey. Lowell hit a sac fly, scoring a run, followed by a Jody Gerut single -- putting runnners at the corners. Then Penny beaned Jason LaRue, loading the bases with two outs. Penny whiffed Newhan to keep the Goat lead at 9-4. But it would be an uphill climb for the Shore in the 9th. Closer Jason Isringhausen came in for a non-save appearance, but Carlos Guillen led off with a single. Izzy settlted down though, whiffing pinch-hitter Jim Thome and inducing a game-ending double play off the bat of Carlos Lee. Horacio Ramirez picked up the win, allowing three runs (all in the first inning) in six innings. He is out of usage for the series. Livan Hernandez suffered the loss, allowing 8 runs and 10 hits in 4+ innings.

Game 3
The GABL World Series moved north as the Goats hosted the Shore in game 3 in what proved to be a game for the ages. Goat ace Tom Glavine got the starting nod against Jersey's Roger Clemens.
Both Chris and I expected a pitchers' duel, and we got one. There was no scoring for either team for the first six innings. The Shore got single runners in the first (Beltran HBP), fifth (Pratt BB) and sixth (Furcal E), but no hits off Glavine, who has been pretty untouchable this postseason. In the meantime, the Goats got six hits in the first six innings (2 doubles!), but couldn't manage to push across a run.
Then things got interesting. Adrian Beltre led off the 7th with a solo homer, breaking up Glavine's no-hitter and staking the Shore to a 1-0 lead. The Goats then went 1-2-3 off Clemens in the 7th. In the 8th, Burrell pinch-hit for Clemens and got a leadoff single, but Glavine induced Beltran into a double play and got Guillen to ground out to the end the inning.
Glavine was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the frame. Both starters finished with impressive lines: CLEMENS: 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K GLAVINE: 8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K But the Shore held a 1-0 lead.
Jersey made it 2-0 in the top of the 9th when Thome led off with a single off Shingo Takatsu. He moved to second on a ground out, then was pinch-run for with David DeJesus. The move paid off as Beltre singled home the run for his 2nd RBI of the game.
The Shore took a 2-0 lead into the 9th with closer Brad Lidge on the mound. Goat slugger Jim Edmonds led off against Lidge and launched a homer to left field, making it 2-1 Shore.I cursed the insurance run that Jersey scored in the 9th. After Lidge whiffed Sean Casey and got Lowell to pop out, Garret Anderson hit a two-out single to bring the winning run to the plate -- Michael Barrett. Barrett played the role of unlikely hero as he took a Lidge offering and delivered it to the bleachers for an unlikely 2-run homer and a walk-off Galactic Goat win, 3-2. The win put the Goats ahead in the series, 2-1.

Game 4
The Shore's Jason Schmidt took the mound again as the Goats countered with Bronson Arroyo.
Game 4 was all Jersey Shore early.
1st: Carlos Guillen leads off with a triple and scores on a ground out. 1-0 Shore 2nd: Bret Boone singles. Schmidt bunts him to 2nd. Guillen singles him home. 2-0 Shore. 3rd: Adrian Beltre leadoff homer. Thome single. Kotsay 2-base error. Beltran sac fly. 4-0 Shore. 4th: Adrian Beltre solo homer . . . . again!. 5-0 Shore 5th: Kelly Stinnett solo homer. 6-0 Shore.
Arroyo's day was done. Meanwhile Schmidt was stingy, allowing only three baserunners in the first five innings.
The Shore did not relent, loading the bases in the 7th -- but coming up empty -- and scoring twice in the 8th inning (Galactic Goat style) with three doubles from Guillen, Beltre and Thome. 8-0 Shore.
The only drama in this game was whether Schmidt could finish what he started.
He could. The Goats could manage nothing off the Shore ace, who finished the game with a 3-hit shutout without hardly breaking a sweat.
The Shore's win ties the series at two games apiece.

Game 5
With the series knotted, 2-2, the GABL season was sure to return to the Shore's home turf. But a critical game 5 would determine which team would be on the brink of elimination when the series headed down the Turnpike, and which would have a chance to hoist the trophy after game 6.
The Goats sent game 1 starter Tim Hudson to the mound against the Shore's game 2 starter, Livan Hernandez in the season's last game at Sinatra Field.
After the whooping the Shore delivered in game 4, it was not a good sign for Goat fans to see Jersey coming hard out the gate.
In the first inning, Guillen and DeJesus started things off with consecutive singles. The Shore's red-hot Adrian Beltre then hit one to center field, where Edmonds made the catch and nailed Guillen at the plate for a fly out double play. Thome then hammered a two-run homer to stake the Shore to a 2-0 lead. But the play at the plate cost the Shore an additional run. Hernandez pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning.
The Shore threatened again in the 2nd inning when Greg Zaun walked and Boone singled. After Livan's sac bunt, Guillen flew out to end the inning and strand two runners in scoring position. The Goats did nothing in the bottom half of the inning.
In the third, the Shore went down 1-2-3, but the Goats got on the board. Brian Roberts walked and stole second. After Hudson bunted foul for a strikeout, Mark Kotsay delivered a run-scoring single to cut Jersey's lead to 2-1. The next hitter, Rafael Furcal, launched a two-run homer to give Garden State a 3-2 lead. Edmonds and Casey then made outs to end the 3rd.
The Goats lead wouldn't last long as the Shore struck back in the 4th. With one out, Carlos Beltran walked and stole second. Greg Zaun followed up with a single, putting runners on the corners. Bret Boone doubled to tie the game 3-3. The Shore has 2nd and 3rd with one out and the pitcher batting. Chris decided to pinch-hit for Livan Hernandez with Calvin Pickering. Pickering struck out, then Hudson got Guillen to ground out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 4th, the Goats re-took the lead, 4-3, when Garret Anderson walked, Michael Barrett singled him to third and Roberts drove him home with a sac fly.
Both pitching staffs worked in and out of trouble in the fifth and had easy times getting through the sixth inning.
With the Goats still leading, 4-3, I decided to pull Hudson to start the 7th, opting for lefty Ray King. King ran into trouble when Gload led off with a dingle and, one out later, moved to third on a pinch-hit by Richard Hidalgo. In the game's scariest moment, Adrian Beltre drove one deep to center where Edmonds pulled down the out, but the tying run scored. Thome then lined out to send the game to the 7th inning stretch with the score tied, 4-4.
Braden Looper pitched a perfect 7th for the Shore. Then Takatsu came in to pitch a perfect top of the 8th.
In the bottom of the 8th, the Shore turned to Tom Gordon to face Mr. Clutch, Jim Edmonds. Like clockwork, Edmonds took Gordon deep to give the Goats the lead again, 5-4. The Goats could manage nothing else in the 8th, but took a 5-4 lead to the 9th with closer Jason Isringhausen on the mound.
In the 9th, Izzy struck out Burrell and got Jamie Burke to ground out. Then, Carlos Guillen managed a two-out single to put the tying run on base. The Shore pinch-hit with Todd Pratt as their last hope, but Isringhausen struck him out to preserve a 5-4 Goat win.
